Celia Cruz, the undisputed ‘Queen of Salsa,’ left an enduring musical legacy that continues to captivate generations. My role as a digital strategist is to honor her iconic status and extend her reach through a comprehensive approach that encompasses everything from platform optimization to strategic partnerships.

Drawing from my experience in UX design, I implemented a phased approach informed by Agile and PI planning principles. This allowed us to prioritize tasks, iterate on strategies based on data, and maintain flexibility to stay on budget.

In the initial phase, establishing a strong digital foundation was crucial. Disorganized profiles and inconsistent branding could hinder discoverability and engagement. By obtaining access and crafting comprehensive bios, we streamlined future content creation and ensured consistency across platforms. The custom brand template further solidified Celia Cruz’s visual identity online.

Challenges

  • Fragmented Digital Presence: The estate’s online presence was scattered across various platforms, each with inconsistent branding and outdated information. This made it difficult for fans to connect with Celia Cruz’s legacy cohesively. Access to these platforms was also fragmented, hindering the ability to update content and manage her brand effectively.
  • Inconsistent Branding: The lack of a unified visual identity across platforms diluted the impact of Celia Cruz’s brand. Inconsistent profile images, outdated cover art, and varying bios created a disjointed fan experience.

Process

  • Centralized Access: We initiated the process of obtaining ownership or administrative access to all relevant social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) and music platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.). This required close collaboration with the Estate’s representatives and meticulous documentation to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Biographical Deep Dive: I collaborated with Omer Pardillo-Cid, the Estate’s executor, to gather comprehensive information about Celia Cruz’s life, career, and impact. We crafted three distinct biographies – long, medium, and short – to suit different platforms and purposes.
  • Visual Identity Overhaul: Working closely with the Estate, we implemented the existing brand style guide for all digital platforms. This included the curation of the right images, fonts, colors, and overall look and feel for digital platforms while staying on brand.
  • Platform-Specific Implementation: We meticulously applied the new bios and visual templates to each platform. This involved updating profile pictures, cover art, and banner images, and optimizing settings to align with the brand guidelines, and ensuring each platform was utilized to its maximum potential.

  • Enhanced User Experience: Streamlined profiles and cohesive branding provided fans with a clear and enjoyable experience across platforms, leading to increased engagement and time spent on the official Celia Cruz channels.
  • Increased Brand Recognition: The unified visual identity and updated bios reinforced Celia Cruz’s iconic status, attracting new fans while strengthening existing relationships.
  • Streamlined Workflow: The creation of a central content library and a branded template significantly improved the efficiency of future content creation, saving time and resources for the Estate.

Step 2: Ongoing Content Strategy

Maintaining a vibrant online presence requires a consistent content strategy. We developed a core library of evergreen content to serve as a foundation, while also emphasizing Celia Cruz’s career milestones. This ensured a steady stream of content that resonated with existing fans and attracted new listeners. Addressing potential limitations in visuals through creative solutions ensured a visually engaging experience for audiences.

  • Bridging Generational Appeal: While honoring Celia Cruz’s rich history was essential, it was equally crucial to create content that would resonate with younger audiences who may be less familiar with her legacy.
  • Maintaining Authenticity: Striking a balance between creative expression and preserving the authenticity of Celia Cruz’s brand and message.

Process

  • Evergreen Content Library: We curated a comprehensive library of high-quality archival photos, videos, quotes, performance highlights, and behind-the-scenes footage. This library served as the foundation for a consistent stream of content throughout the year.
  • Career Milestone Focus: We developed themed campaigns around significant moments in Celia Cruz’s career, such as album releases, awards, and collaborations. We leveraged historical photos, videos, and testimonials from Omer Pardillo-Cid to create in-depth and engaging content.
  • Visual Content Enhancement: To overcome limitations in visual resources, we employed creative solutions such as:
    • Text Overlays: Added context and information to existing photos.
    • Simple Animations: Created short, engaging animated graphics to accompany quotes or statistics.
    • Collage Design: Combined multiple images to create more dynamic and visually appealing posts.
  • Real-Time Engagement: We captured and shared content from key events, such as the Miami Beach street naming and the “Celia Cruz Forever” exhibit, providing fans with a real-time connection to Celia’s legacy.

Outcomes

  • Engagement & Growth: We saw a substantial increase in social media engagement, including an 826.4% growth in content interactions since the beginning of the project.
  • Expanded Reach: The diverse content strategy attracted new audiences, including younger demographics, by highlighting Celia Cruz’s cultural relevance and enduring influence. This yielded a 260.1% increase on Facebook and 82.1% on Instagram.
  • Brand Authenticity: By emphasizing Celia Cruz’s authentic story and accomplishments, we fostered a stronger connection between her legacy and a new generation of fans.

Step 3: Release Campaigns & Initiatives

For new releases and special projects (like “Celia” with Gente de Zona), we implemented targeted campaigns to maximize their visibility and impact. Collaborating closely with various stakeholders ensured a cohesive strategy. Tailored content, playlist pitching, and data-driven insights allowed for audience engagement and campaign optimization.

  • Amplify Impact: Achieve a successful launch of the “Celia” single, driving awareness, engagement, and ultimately, increased streams.
  • Broaden Reach: Introduce Celia Cruz’s music to new audiences, particularly younger generations familiar with Gente de Zona.
  • Data-Driven Optimization: Track key metrics throughout the campaign to inform future promotional strategies for Celia Cruz’s music and similar collaborations.
  • Legacy Building: Solidify Celia Cruz’s iconic status by showcasing her timeless appeal through a modern collaboration.

  • Strategic Alignment: Developed a comprehensive release strategy in close collaboration with Magnus Records, ensuring that all promotional efforts aligned with the Celia Cruz Estate’s brand guidelines and overarching vision.
  • Social Media Amplification: Created a series of engaging Instagram Stories featuring behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive artist interviews, and song teasers, directing traffic to a dedicated landing page on the official Celia Cruz website.
  • Website Update: Updated Celia Cruz’s website with a prominent section dedicated to the “Celia” release, including details about the collaboration, a music video player, and links to streaming platforms.
  • Content Calendar Integration: Incorporated the “Celia” release into Celia Cruz’s existing content calendar, ensuring a consistent flow of related content alongside other posts about her legacy.
  • Leveraging Media Opportunities: Maximized exposure from Gente de Zona’s performance at the Premio Lo Nuestro by coordinating social media posts, press coverage, and behind-the-scenes content.

This requires careful consideration of tone, visuals, and messaging to resonate with younger generations without compromising authenticity.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Identifying and securing mutually beneficial partnerships with labels, DSPs, and other relevant brands is essential for long-term growth. This involves navigating negotiations, ensuring alignment of values, and maximizing the value of each collaboration.

  • Cost-Effective Solutions: Employed creativity and resourcefulness to maximize the impact with limited budgets. This involved leveraging existing tools, repurposing content, and seeking out mutually beneficial partnerships.
